Auburn v Texas A&M

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#47 - John Samuel Shenker

Game — Auburn @ Texas A&M, September 21st, 2019

Right about this moment, I thought Auburn was going to win the 2019 national title.

With a true freshman quarterback that had just taken down a top 10 team in his first game, possible the best defense in the country, and two budding sophomore superstars at wide receiver, I was buying in.

Anthony Schwartz had just torched Texas A&M on the ground on the opening drive, and Auburn marched right back down into the redzone at the end of the first quarter to go up 14-0.

Oh, and now we were going to see a Joey Gatewood package? Auburn fans’ expectations were sky high here.

How many times did we see this play work for Gus in his time at Auburn?

Shenker lined up as an eligible receiver as an uncovered offensive lineman, and sure enough, the A&M defense let him waltz right by as they focused on Gatewood.

Easy six.

Shenker, now a senior, is still on the team in 2021. Even with Auburn having a deep tight end group, he’ll see plenty of action this fall. I’d say odds are better than 50/50 he scores again.
