Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#46 — Craig Stevens, LB

Game — Auburn vs. West Virginia, September 19, 2009

There are games we experience that we will never forget. I don’t know a single Auburn fan that attended this game that would fail to tell you their story of this game. If you talked to 20, you’d hear 20 different stories on how they dealt with the rain. Personally mine involves huddling beneath the south end zone stands and nearly getting into a fight with a Chambers County Sheriff’s Deputy who tried to push his way through the crowd and shoved the wrong person. My sister will tell you about getting stuck in a line trying to get under the West Upper Deck awning and getting everyone to let her and my (now) wife through by screaming “I’VE GOTTA PEE!”. It will be a “where were you?” game for so many Auburn people for a very long time.

As for the game, West Virginia jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, but Auburn gradually stormed back and led 34-30, but the Tigers were forced to punt back to the Mountaineers with 4 minutes to go. A middle screen had been successful for WVU earlier in the game, but the last attempt in the second half had been intercepted by DT Jake Ricks and set up Auburn’s go-ahead score. This time, once again on a second and 10, Craig Stevens decided to just put the game away for good.

West Virginia outgained Auburn by over 100 yards, Noel Devine averaged 8.5 yards per carry, and the Mountaineer defense held Ben Tate to just 75 yards on 19 carries. But you can’t turn the ball over 5 times. Especially on not screen passes.
