Gus Malzahn said he wanted to sign a large OL class in 2020. He wasn’t lying...

With this weekend being the last chance for programs to host their top targets before fall camp gets underway, pretty much every team in the nation is hosting some sort of major event. Auburn put on the “War Eagle Picnic” and brought a large number of top targets including instate offensive lineman 3* OL Jeremiah Wright. Despite holding commitments from five offensive lineman already, the Tigers aren’t yet done landing big uglies up front and Wright has long been one of their top targets. Today, he decided to pull the trigger.

Being a late bloomer on the recruiting trail, Wright doesn’t boast the lengthiest of offer lists but has long been a top target for both Auburn and Tennessee for some time. He’s been a Tigers lean but had previously stated he was going to wait until December to make his decision. It appears the AU coaching staff as able to convince him to speed up that timeline.

Highlights

Scouting Report

Wright still has plenty to learn to play offensive tackle at the next level. He often stops moving his feet during contact, is over reliant on his strength and has a tendency to play with poor pad level. But all of those are correctable things. What is really hard to teach is how to be a mean SOB who wants to take someone’s head off every snap. Wright won’t have to learn that skill when he gets to the Plains.

At 6’5” 330 lbs, he’s a behemoth prep prospect who will more than likely start his career on the outside. However, he’s could easily slide inside if needed. Playing both ways for his high school team, you can see Wright’s raw athleticism on display. He’s a strong, powerful force up front who has all the tools to develop into a very good lineman at the next level. It should be fun to watch his development in the coming years.

The Class

During his National Signing Day press conference in February, Gus Malzahn told the media “you will see us probably sign the largest offensive line class we’ve done since I’ve been here with this class, and I think we’re already in a pretty good spot with 2020 going into this class”. There were many people, myself included, who seemed skeptical about that comment considering Auburn’s inability to close on top OL talent, specifically offensive tackles, in the previous classes. Well Malzahn has sure made good on his word. The Tigers now hold pledges from six offensive line commits, four expected to start their careers at offensive tackle.

Interestingly, they might not be done either. Reportedly, Auburn is still after some JUCO OT talent, namely 3* Brenden Coffey, and will undoubtedly continue to pursue some highly ranked prep players as well. As frustrating as it has been to see the Tigers sign such small OL classes in recent cycles, it sure is nice to see the staff loading up with talent in the trenches to prepare for the daunting task of replacing all five starters in 2020.

War Eagle Jeremiah!
