Auburn Sets Date With Alcorn State

Get ready, father. For your children may sleep once more.

The 2020 non-conference football schedule has fallen into place!

The final piece of Auburn’s 2020 non-conference schedule has fallen into place as the Tigers have scheduled Alcorn State for the season opener at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Alcorn State joins a non-con roster of North Carolina (in Atlanta on September 12th), Southern Miss on September 26th, and UMass on November 14th. The relatively (supremely) light non-conference schedule comes during an even year where Auburn will have to play Georgia and Alabama on the road.

The other home games for that season will be the usual suspects in SEC West play, as Arkansas, Texas A&M, and LSU come to town. Kentucky will visit the Plains from the East, and Auburn will also travel across the western border twice to take on Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

As a part of the game contract, Auburn will pay $475,000 to Alcorn State for the privilege of an easy season-opening win, but that’s not all —

The game contract also stipulates that Alcorn State’s band, known as the “Sounds of Dyn-O-mite” (SOD), will be provided with up to 419 tickets should they attend.

Hell. Yeah.

According to the article above, Auburn was going to play instate foe Alabama A&M before the Bulldogs backed out of the date to take on Mississippi State instead. The overall non-con slate is super light for that season, but that may not be a bad thing. Auburn will be retooling nearly everything along both the offensive and defensive lines, and will likely need a few warmup games before they’re ready to truly take on SEC competition. The only conference game that will likely come in the opening month of the season would happen on September 19th. Since the expansion of the SEC in 2012, Auburn has played LSU in the month of September three times (2012, 2016, 2018), with the game in 2014 falling on the first weekend in October. The 19th seems a prime slot for the Bayou Bengals to slide in for the first conference game of the year.
