Tournament Round-Up: Vanderbilt

#8 Auburn vs #1 Vanderbilt

Game 7: 11-1 L/8

Well this was a game that happened. Not saying that I condone just rolling out the helmets against anyone but where the Auburn pitching staff is right now (trying to give Tanner Burns and Jack Owen as much rest as possible and getting work for the young guys work) there was no way Auburn could have overtaken Vandy in this game. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, I think Vandy is the best team in the country and it will be a disappointment in Nashville if there isn’t a big trophy from this team. That said, I thought Richard Fitts did an excellent job against long odds, going 4 innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out 5. The only true offense on a 2 hit night was Will Holland’s solo bomb in the 4th. The Tigers now regroup to take on a team they just saw five days ago in the LSU Tigers who…might be a little sleepy for a 1:30 first pitch…

Game 5: #6 Texas A&M vs #2 Georgia, 2-0 UGA

Now this was a fun one to watch. Texas A&M had a no-no going and was just two over the minimum through 7.1 innings, the only problem was that they couldn’t push across a run to put the Dawgs away. That run didn’t come until the bottom of the 9th.

With that Georgia moves to the evening session while A&M will stay in the 9:30 start for the 3rd time in a row. Nothing was really gained or lost here for either time, Georgia is a Top 8 seed and I think A&M will host, all that they missed on was slam dunking that particular topic. A win over the Rebels today should also finish that debate but I think the Rebels are hoping they might be able to clinch the same goal with a win as well.

Game 6: #7 Ole Miss vs #2 Arkansas, 5-3 ARK

This was a game that even though Ole Miss led a points, you always felt that Arkansas was just biding their time till they asserted their will. And that’s what happened. The Hogs get the win 5-3 and advance for a really interesting matchup against Georgia, a team that they didn’t play this season.

Game 8: #5 LSU vs #4 Mississippi State, 6-5 MSU/17

I went to bed last night with State up 4-0 and figured that this one would continue in that way. I then woke up this morning to a text from my chosen brother Jason…THEY WENT 17 INNINGS?!?! That’s right. 6:34 minutes of baseball as LSU held State scoreless for the next 12 innings while they tied things up with a pair of runs in both the 5th and 8th to push things into extras. LSU thought they had things wrapped up in the 16th with a lone run but state matched it in the bottom half. That set this up in the bottom of the 17th.

On Deck

  • Game 9: #6 Texas A&M vs #7 Ole Miss – 9:30 AM
  • Game 10: #8 Auburn vs #5 LSU – 1:30ish
  • Game 11: #3 Georgia vs #2 Arkansas – 4:30 PM
  • Game 12: #1 Vanderbilt vs #4 Mississippi State – 8:00ish

Who knows what will happen today for Auburn. They could come out and LSU still have their blanket and bedhead when they get to the ballpark, but Auburn will need someone to get 27 outs and bring the bats to win this one. There isn’t much to play for if you are Auburn, you are comfortably in the tournament next week and you are probably only changing if you are a 2 or 3 seed at this point. For LSU, a win over a higher ranked RPI team (yes, it’s true) in Auburn would be another nice feather for a regional host resume, but you did only get done playing about 10 hours before first pitch today, so there’s that. It will be interesting to see what happens, no matter what it is!
