This one has been a longtime coming. On June 5th, 2016, Auburn offered
4* QB Bo Nix after seeing him in person at a camp that day.
But let’s be real. His recruitment started long before then. The son of former Auburn QB great Patrick Nix, who etched his name in Auburn football lore when he came off the bench in the 1993 Iron Bowl and connected with Frank Sanders, Bo has been visiting Auburn since basically his birth.
He took his time making his decision, visited a number of top programs and slowly whittled his list down to a select few. But in the end, it felt pretty inevitable that the nation’s top ranked dual threat QB would end up in orange and blue. Today, that became a reality as the 2x state champ officially signed with the Tigers.
Nix is everything you want in a QB. At 6’2” 205 lbs, he’s plenty big enough to play the position, possesses an above average arm, has the wheels to keep defenses honest and is deadly accurate. But what might be his greatest strength is his leadership. Recruiting analysts have raved about Nix’s intangibles after seeing him play in person and meeting with him. At pretty much every recruiting event he attended, Nix would end up calling all the plays for his team’s 7 on 7 competitions. Numerous top prospects such as 5* WR Jadon Haselwood, 4* WR George Pickens, 4* RB Noah Cain, 4* RB Mark-Antony and 4* WR John Dunmore have sited Nix as being one of the big reasons they had interest in Auburn in the first place. You could make a strong argument that the Tigers still have Pickens on the commit list because of the bond between him and Nix.
But nobody is perfect and there will be some obvious growing pains for the young man when he steps on campus this spring. Nix sometimes has the tendency to play TOO fast resulting in sloppy footwork which can hurt his downfield accuracy. Nix also has the problem a lot of gunslingers have and that’s trusting his arm maybe a bit too much and forcing things when there might be an easier check down option available. He will also have to prove to Gus that a true freshman can be entrusted with this offense. A task that will be even tougher given the smoke swirling Malzhan’s extremely hot seat.
At a minimum, Nix will at least raise the bar required by the other QBs on the roster to win the starting job next season.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if he did more than that and ended up being the guy next fall. Either way, the Tigers are adding an elite QB to the roster and that’s always a good thing.
