NumerAUlogy — 2 Days

Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaam

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#2 — Cam Newton, QB

Game — Auburn vs. Oregon, January 10, 2010

Obviously you knew who this was. To some extent, I’m a little sad that him going against Chizik’s call to kneel the ball before Byrum’s field goal went awry. How fitting would it have been for Cam to cap off that season by slamming through Oregon’s defense all on his own to clinch the game?

Still, we have this:

Gus went to this play a few times until Oregon finally stopped putting some poor linebacker on Emory Blake. This is a simple post/rail combo. Cam knows it’s zone because no one tracks Blake across the formation. The safety to the top is in conflict. He follows Darvin Adams on the post, and Emory is left so open that he can jog through his route and into the end zone.

#2 is not “officially” retired, but no one has worn that number since Cam and Aairon Savage. I’m sure we’ll get an official ceremony some time in the next few years.
