NumerAUlogy — 50 Days

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#50 — Mike Pelton, DT

Game — Auburn vs. Kentucky, September 24, 1994

Kentucky came to Auburn on a Thursday night in September in 1994 attempting to break three streaks:

  1. Auburn had won 11 straight in the series
  2. Auburn was on a 19 game winning streak
  3. Kentucky head coach Bill Curry was on a personal 0 for 10 run against Auburn

Absolutely none of this would turn around for the Wildcats on this night. Auburn took a 21-0 lead into halftime, then scored early in the third quarter after a Kentucky fumble inside their own 5 yard line to make it 28-0. Then, a heads-up Mike Pelton made a play:

Not many players noticed it was a live ball, but Pelton, a veteran defensive lineman, pounced on the ball for the easy score. Auburn would go on to win 41-14.

Pelton himself would get into coaching after a short pro career. After coaching with Gene Chizik at Iowa State, Chizik called him home in 2011 to coach Auburn’s defensive line after the departure of fellow Auburn DL legend-turned-coach Tracy Rocker.
