Recruiting Recap: Drew Bobo Earns Offer

NCAA Football: Auburn Spring Game
John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

The son of Auburn’s new offensive coordinator impressed at the Tigers’ camp yesterday and earned an offer.

Yesterday, Auburn hosted their first high school camp under Bryan Harsin. These camps are important evaluation opportunities for staffs as it gives them a chance to see kids in action against better competition and gives the staff a chance to coach them and see how they respond. Camps this cycle are even more important considering it’s been over a year since coaches have been able to meet with kids in person. Recruits from all over the southeast flocked to the Plains in hopes of impressing Auburn’s new staff and earning an offer. Surprisingly, there was only one new offer reported but it was a big one.

Drew Bobo Offered

3-star OL Drew Bobo wanted to earn his offer. He didn’t want to get one just because his dad was a coach on the staff. That’s why he suited up Monday to work out for new Auburn offensive line coach Will Friend.

“My mentality was just go out there and compete, have fun and finish through everything,” said Bobo. “I just wanted to camp and do my best because I didn’t want it to be given to me because my dad works at Auburn. I just didn’t want it to be given to me. I’m happy I had to come out here and earn it by going to work out and camp.”

Coming off impressive camp performances at Alabama and Georgia, Bobo continued to prove he’s one of the top offensive line prospects in the southeast. His performance, like his one in Athens, earned him an offer.

While listed as a tackle by some sites, his future in the SEC is likely in the interior where both Auburn and Georgia are recruiting him. Those 2 programs are likely to be the top contenders for the big man though he also has official visits set to Georgia Tech, Virginia, and Kentucky. Keep an eye on UK in particular as another team who can make a big run. South Carolina’s former offensive line coach who worked with Mike Bobo is now in Lexington and has a good relationship with the younger Bobo.

A decision is likely to come this summer. He still has two official visits to use and it wouldn’t be surprising if they were to Auburn and Athens. Obviously with his dad being on staff, you have to like Auburn’s chances but Bobo also grew up cheering for the Bulldogs and might not want to play for his dad. We’ll see what his thought process is come July but this is a race Auburn fans should be keeping a close eye on this summer.

4-star OL Return to Plains

Not that long ago, 4-star OL Qae’shon Sapp dropped a top teams list that didn’t include the Tigers. It appeared the big man out of Leesburg, GA was not someone Auburn fans should pay much attention to this cycle.

Things have changed.

After visiting Auburn last week and telling AuburnUndercover’s Keith Niebuhr that the Tigers were once again a factor in his recruitment, Sapp was back on campus yesterday for Auburn’s camp. He was in Tallahassee the day prior. FSU was believed to be the overwhelming favorite heading into June.

There’s still plenty of work to do and I think you’d still have to give the Noles the nod right now but in just a short amount of time Auburn has gone from not contending to likely being the top challenger. Sapp’s relationship with Will Friend has been key and Auburn’s new offensive line coach is working hard to get Sapp to the Plains. Like Bobo, Sapp is listed as an offensive tackle but his future in college is likely in the interior. An interior offensive line class of Sapp and Bobo would be an excellent start for Coach Friend.

Top Running Back Targets Visiting

Both AuburnUndercover’s Keith Niebuhr and AuburnSports’s Jeffrey Lee posted threads on their respective message boards titled “Big week for RB recruiting” for good reason. Arguably Auburn’s top 3 running back targets in the 2022 class, 3-star Quinshon Judkins, 4-star Damari Alston, and 4-star Omarion Hampton are expected on campus this week.

Judkins will be the first visitor as he’s expected on the Plains today. The Pike Road standout has flashed in camp settings this spring and is someone Auburn’s new staff targeted very early as a top target. Both Florida and Penn State are also major factors in his recruitment though I like where the Tigers sit right now. He’s someone this staff would love to get on board as soon as possible.

Tomorrow, Alston will make his trek to Auburn to meet with the Tigers’ new staff. He’s been all over the southeast this past week including an official visit to LSU who appear to have taken the lead in his recruitment. He also has set official visits to Northwestern and Penn State. Auburn and Florida are both working to secure those final 2 OV spots. This will be an important visit for the Tigers’ chances in curbing LSU’s momentum.

Finally, this weekend, the number eleven ranked running back in the 2022 class will take an official visit to the Plains. Auburn has very quickly become a top contender for Omarion Hampton out of Clayton, NC despite only having offered a couple of months ago. However, getting him away from the home state Tar Heels will be difficult. Ohio State also lurks as a major threat. This is a big time recruitment and one the Tigers have work to do if they wish to win. But getting him on campus for an official visit this weekend is a major step towards doing just that.

If Auburn can somehow snag two of these three targets, you’d have to give Carnell Williams an A+ for the 2022 cycle. He snatched Tank Bigsby from UGA two cycles ago and until the coaching change had another top 5 back in the class in Armoni Goodwin. With a more stable situation and a running back friendly offense, I am optimistic Caddy has a chance to start stockpiling how caliber backs.
