NumerAUlogy - 83 Days

Todd J. Van Emst

How many close losses against LSU are going to dot this countdown?

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#83 - Gabe McKenzie, DE

Game - Auburn vs LSU, September 20, 2008

Do you remember what you did in the days following the 3-2 victory over Mississippi State in 2008? Because if you were anything like me, you definitely didn’t think that we were going to beat LSU at home the following Saturday. That game had a way of scarring us, and it was almost a perfect entry into the final Tubervillain season on the Plains.

Auburn was still 3-0 when the Bayou Bengals came to town, and LSU entered as defending national champs, ranked 6th and 3-0 as well. College Gameday was there, everyone was pumped, it was a big deal.

I didn’t think that it through that George Costanza didn’t actually get the last laugh when he unveiled Jerk Store on that guy at work, but nevertheless. I can still blame Tommy Tuberville. In typical Auburn-LSU fashion, the good Tigers built a lead and had to watch as LSU clawed its way back to win the game late.

Part of the fun in the first half, when Auburn built a 14-3 halftime edge, was the heroic action of one Gabe McKenzie, former tight end signee who got turned around to face the other way and play defense. I would say that the below is his greatest work as a Tiger.

After that, LSU scored 23 second-half points and this one looked quite a bit like their wins in 2017 and 2018. Gross.

If Auburn’s going to have #83 score in 2021, they’ll be depending on the magic of junior receiver Malcolm Russell, a 6’0 backup from Pat Sullivan’s alma mater in Birmingham. He’s only ever seen the field one time, against Samford in 2019, so I think we’re probably going to carry on this one for another couple of years.
