Mid-week Round-Up: @ UAB

Auburn vs UAB (Regions Park)

  • Tuesday: 6-5 W

It’s been a universal constant with Auburn this season that the offense is pretty good, the defense is above average to really good and that pitching is the bump in the armor. Starting pitching has been pretty good except for a game here or there but all starting pitchers have gotten the game to the 5th inning before handing it off to the pen, and once that has happened, that’s where the trouble has sort of began. In Birmingham on Tuesday evening, Auburn saw its season so far in a single game. Joseph Gonzalez got the nod to start and the highly touted Freshman from Puerto Rico only had a perfecto going through 5 innings, striking out 7, before giving up a lead off double with the Tigers up 2-0. He would get lifted for Brooks Fuller, who just didn’t have it on Tuesday and gave up 3 runs (1 run was charged to Gonzalez) but didn’t record an out before Hayden Mullins entered the game and put out the fire in a big way. Mullins would get out of the inning and would give up only 1 run on 2 hits in his 4 innings of work, but would strike out 8 Blazer batters in the process giving the Auburn staff a powerful 15 strikeouts on the evening.

The other thing that Mullins did, was gave the Auburn offense time to get up off the mat. In the previous inning, Auburn had a base running blunder (one of the first this season that I can remember seeing) that cost them putting up a crooked number in the top half of the inning. After losing the lead, the Auburn bats would only take 1 more inning off before going to playing station to station baseball, which is what you have to do in a park as large as Regions. The tigers would take advantage of UAB walks, hit by pitches and an error along with 2 hits to drive in 4 runs in the winning inning. It was a really nice come from behind win for the Tigers to begin to build confidence as the non-conference weekend part of the schedule finishes this weekend.

Word on the street is that Cody Greenhill will get the start on Friday this weekend as he returns from an ankle thing that took him out of the Oklahoma game and held him out of the Boston College series. So far this season, the Trojans are 5-5 with a nice win over Oral Roberts who took 2 out of 3 against LSU this past weekend. Little Rock is a solid ball club but Auburn should take the series. This is a good tune up series before Auburn starts the SEC schedule next weekend on the road at Ole Miss. I am looking for Auburn to take 2 of 3 this weekend but I am almost expecting a sweep.
