It was a new day for Auburn Basketball!

November 5, 2019 - Auburn Arena

We are now 34 of the way threw the countdown and we start looking back at the 2019-2020 Auburn Basketball season today. The first game was against Georgia Southern and it was a team full of new faces looking to fill some massive shoes.

J’Von McCormick would take the reins at the Point Guard spot. Samir Doughty would expand his role and fill the shoes Bryce Brown had left. Auburn’s other 3 seniors: Anfernee McLemore, Danjel Purifoy and Austin Wiley looked to have big senior seasons.

A freshmen class full of immense talent, led by Isaac Okoro would arrive on the scene looking to continue the success of the previous 3 seasons.

Auburn had their hands full with the Eagles throughout this one. After trailing 19-13 early, the Tigers would go on an 8-0 run to regain the lead behind a 3 from Danjel Purifoy and back to back buckets from Austin Wiley.

The teams continued to trade the lead but Auburn would go into the locker room with a 41-37 lead on the back of Devan Cambridge who made his first two 3-pointers of his college career in the final 90 seconds of the half.

In the second half, with Auburn up just 2, Auburn would go on a 6-0 run 3 minutes in courtesy of buckets from Okoro, Wiley and Doughty.

The Eagles would pull within 53-48 but Auburn would finally build a double digit lead courtesy of an 8-0 run. Three free throws from Jamal Johnson would get it started which was followed by a layup from Doughty and capped off by a 3 from Danjel Purifoy to give Auburn a 61-48 lead with less than 12 minutes to go.

The Eagles wouldn’t go away though and with 6 minutes, the lead for Auburn was only 5 at 65-60. But the final 6 minutes finally saw Auburn begin to pull away thanks to J’Von McCormick and Isaac Okoro.

McCormick converted a 3-point play to make it 70-61 with 5 minutes left. Okoro and McCormick would each convert 2 buckets at the basket and Auburn built their biggest lead of the night 2:30 to go at 14, 78-64.

Samir Doughty would knock down 5 free throws in the final 2 minutes to finally fend off the challenge from Georgia Southern.

Samir Doughty led the Tigers with 20 points and had 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Austin Wiley had 13 points and 9 rebounds with Danjel Purifoy also scoring 13 with 5 rebounds. Isaac Okoro scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds in his collegiate debut.
