Tip-Off Countdown: #40 Auburn 76 Florida 62

NCAA Basketball: Florida at Auburn John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

Balanced Scoring leads Auburn to their first regular season over Auburn since the beginning of the millennium!!

February 5, 2019 - Auburn Arena

There was some dubious history coming into this game against Florida for Auburn. Auburn had not defeated Florida in the regular season since 2000 and at all since the 2009 SEC Tournament in Tampa, a span of 11 games. For Auburn, it was a chance to make some history and get back over .500 in SEC play.

Samir Doughty would make a huge impact on both sides of the floor in this contest and started the Tigers off right with a 3-pointer on the 2nd possession of the evening.

Bryce Brown would get his night started well knocking down his first 3 of the night on the next possession which was followed by an incredible 3-point play converted by J’Von McCormick. Here’s a look at some #VintageJVon.

J’Von got some early minutes after Jared Harper got a bit banged up and had to come out of the game due to an ankle injury. Chuma Okeke also had an injury scare following hard on his hip but would also continue. Both players would return to the game and play a big role in the outcome.

The Tigers would hold a 3-6 point lead for the next 10 minutes or so before 5 quick points from Doughty, a 3 and a layup would put the Tigers up 30-19 with 7 minutes left in the half. Doughty’s 3 was setup with some razzle dazzle from Chuma.

Auburn would continue to hold serve and led 36-30 at halftime behind 10 1st half points from Doughty.

The Tigers would start the 2nd half on a 13-4 run, courtesy of the dynamic duo in the backcourt. In the run, Jared Harper would get into the scoring column with 5 straight including a 3 ball to put Auburn ahead 45-34 and then Bryce Brown would complete the run with back to back buckets in the paint including this highlight-reel dunk courtesy of a lob from Jared Harper.

The best pass and dunk of the night came courtesy of Danjel Purifoy and Horace Spencer with 11 minutes to go. Purifoy threw it up beautifully and Horace made sure to finish it.

Auburn would stretch the lead to 18 following a steal and dunk from Doughty, making it 67-49 with a little over 8 minutes left.

That would be Auburn’s last bucket until under 2 minutes left and fortunately for Auburn, the Gators could get no closer than 10 during that stretch.

With 1:40 left and Auburn up 71-60, Chuma would put this game away with a steal off an inbounds pass and go coast-to-coast for layup that would send the Gators back to Gainesville with their first ever loss playing inside Auburn Arena.

Bryce Brown led Auburn scorers with 14 points. Samir Doughty had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Chuma Okeke had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Auburn also got Austin Wiley back for a few minutes in this game after missing 5 games due to injury which gave the Tigers another body down low.

Here are the highlights!

After a 3 game winning streak, the Tigers would lose their next 2, falling at LSU and at home against Ole Miss. With the season at somewhat of a crossroads falling to 5-6 in the SEC, Auburn would face a must win in their next contest in a building that had been an absolute house of horrors for many years.
