Tip-Off Countdown: #93 Auburn 117 Coastal Carolina 72

NCAA Basketball: Coastal Carolina at Auburn John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

Auburn made 21 3s, still an Auburn program record.

December 15, 2016 - Auburn Arena

Coming into this game, the Tigers were coming off a last second heartbreaking loss to Boston College in Madison Square Garden and the Tigers took their frustrations from that game out on former Auburn coach Cliff Ellis’s team, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

Over the last 3 years, we have grown accustomed to seeing Auburn shoot a gaudy number of 3-pointers in the past few years and being quite successful at it too. After all, 3 > 2.

But those Tigers were unable to match what these Tigers did on this night, and that is making a program record 21 3-pointers in a game.

At the time, it tied the SEC record for 3s made in a game. Arkansas back in 1997 and Kentucky back in 1990 were the other teams to make 21 3s in a game. That record was broken by Alabama back in February when they made 22 3s in a game, a game by the way that they LOST to Auburn.

This was a 25-22 game with 7 minutes left in the half but Auburn would go on an absolute tear from here going on a 23-0 run to build a 26 point lead with 2 minutes left in the half. Auburn led 56-27 at halftime with Purifoy leading the way with 17 1st half points, and 3 made 3-pointers. Jared Harper had 4 3s in the first half for all 12 of his 1st half points.

The Tigers would pour it on in the 2nd with Auburn reaching the century mark with 5:26 left in grand fashion courtesy of a dunk from T.J. Dunans.

The record breaking 21st 3 would come from walk-on Will Macoy with 2 minutes to put Auburn ahead by 50.

Here’s a breakdown of the 21 3-pointers made by the Tigers on this night:

Danjel Purifoy - 5

Jared Harper - 5

Ronnie Johnson - 2

T.J Dunans - 2

Devin Waddell - 2

Will Macoy - 2

Mustapha Heron - 1

T.J. Lang - 1

Anfernee McLemore - 1

The 117 points is the most the Tigers would score in the 2016-2017 season and this was also their largest margin of victory at 45 points.

Purifoy scored 27 in the loss to Boston College and matched that mark in this one leading the way for Auburn, and also had 7 rebounds. Mustapha Heron had 17 points and 7 rebounds. Jared Harper had 16, Ronnie Johnson had 11 and T.J. Dunans to round out the double figure scorers.

Career highs in points were set by Will Macoy (8) and Devin Waddell (7) in this contest as well.

There’s a lot in this one but here are the highlights!

Tomorrow at #92 we’ll go from 117 points and 21 3-pointers to a buzzer beating 3-pointer.

War Eagle!
