AuburnFamilyNews.com: Bowling Green Transfer QB Grant Loy Commits to Auburn

Auburn add some much needed depth to the QB room.

Auburn heads into the 2020 season with zero quarterback controversy. Bo Nix will be Auburn’s starting quarterback and there’s excitement that the former 5-star can take a big step in his sophomore campaign under the tutelage of Chad Morris.

However, behind him are a lot of questions. Cord Sandberg looked solid in limited reps last season but wasn’t asked to do a whole lot. True freshman Chayil Garnett has some intriguing tools but is a long way from being SEC ready. There’s also preferred walk on Sawyer Pate who could battle for that #2 spot. Auburn also recently landed former Howard quarterback Caylin Newton though he’s expected to transition to wide receiver this fall.

All that to say, if Bo Nix were to get hurt Auburn would likely be in serious trouble. Adding any sort of depth is a good idea and that’s exactly what Auburn did today. Former Bowling Green quarterback Grant Loy announced this afternoon on Twitter he is transferring to the Plains.

Loy will have one year of eligibility so this is clearly Auburn attempting to bridge the gap at that #2 QB spot until Dematrius Davis arrives on campus while allowing Loy the chance to compete in the SEC. The former walk on started seven games for the Falcons last season. He threw for 1,137 yards and 6 TDs (ignore those 11 interceptions please) while also rushing for 427 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Loy is a big kid at 6’5” 223 lbs who was used often as a runner while at Bowling Green. It wouldn’t shock me to see Auburn use him some out of the Wildcat in goal line situations like they should have done more of with Joey Gatewood last season. But this move is mostly Auburn attempting shore up depth behind Bo Nix.
