Auburn Hoops Recruiting Update

247 Sports

The Future of Auburn Basketball will become much clearer over the next 2 weeks.

Auburn has been sitting on 3 commitments for the Class of 2020 since mid-November. Who will join Sharife Cooper, Chris Moore and Justin Powell on the Plains next season? Over the next couple of weeks, we should get some answers on how the remaining class of 2020 will fill out.

Auburn has 3 scholarships left to fill with 5 seniors graduating plus Isaac Okoro’s departure to the NBA Draft. Several top uncommitted players will be committing over the course of two weeks including the top player of the 2020 class, Jalen Green, who Auburn fans have been salivating over for months. Today, we’re going to look at the guys Auburn is in on that are picking their school soon.

J.T. Thor - 6’10” Power Forward, Norcross HS - Norcross, Georgia

Commitment Date: Sunday 4/12 around 11AM

Schools: Auburn, Oklahoma State, UCLA

Could Bruce strike in the Atlanta area once again?

Thor was once a five star recruit in the 2021 class but reclassified to the 2020 class and is a four-star prospect ranked 51st in the 247 Sports Recruiting Rankings.

Thor has long been favored to commit to Oklahoma State to join another freshmen phenom, Cade Cunningham, and the Cowboys next season. Auburn entered the picture late but have made a strong impression on Thor. He was on-campus for the Texas A&M game back on March 4th and the Tigers made a strong impression on him. He was planning on taking an Official Visit to Auburn before all of the Coronavirus stuff put a halt on all of that.

I still think Thor picks the Cowboys but with the momentum Auburn has gained with Thor lately, Auburn could have themselves a very nice Easter Sunday.

Jalen Green - 6’5” Shooting Guard, Prolific Prep - Fresno, California

Commitment Date: Wednesday 4/15

Schools: Auburn, Memphis, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Fresno State, Professional Options

A consensus Top 5 player across all recruiting boards: this is the guy Auburn fans have been wanting for a long time. Jalen visited Auburn back in September, the same weekend Sharife Cooper made it official and committed to the Tigers. Jalen and Sharife are close and a backcourt of Cooper and Green next season would be one Tiger fans would go crazy over.

For awhile, it seem as if Auburn and Memphis have been the 2 favorites for Green but he has not ruled out turning pro yet completely. Many of expert crystal balls have trended Auburn’s way the last month or so. He was named to the McDonald’s All-American team and was named SI’s All-American Player of the Year, among many other accolades.

Of the 3 committing over the next 2 weeks, Jalen is the one I feel the best about committing to Auburn.

Greg Brown - 6’9” Power Forward, Vandegrift HS - Austin, Texas

Commitment Date: Friday 4/24

Schools: Auburn, Texas, Memphis, Kentucky, Michigan

This has seemingly turned into a 3 horse race between the Auburn, Texas and Memphis. Brown would immediately fill the big man void left by departing seniors Austin Wiley and Anfernee McLemore. Brown would team well with Jaylin Williams and Stretch Akingbola in the frontcourt as well. Brown’s father is very high on Bruce Pearl and Brown made his official visit during Iron Bowl weekend (Brilliant Bruce)!

While Texas and Memphis have been the front-runners, Auburn has gained ground lately. He has a great relationship with Texas coach Shaka Smart and with his coaching future uncertain, it opened the possibility of him leaving home even more. But with Shaka going on a late season run and Texas keeping him around, it leads me to believe that Texas is still the team to beat for Greg Brown but we will see what happens in 2 weeks.

Dylan Cardwell - 6’11” Center, McEachern HS - Powder Springs, Georgia

Commitment Date: TBD

Schools: Auburn, Maryland, Georgia, Connecticut, Miami, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

Cardwell didn’t play his senior season due to transfer rules but is very familiar with the Auburn program. He goes to the same high school as Sharife Cooper, he’s another player on the AOT AAU team which Auburn has recruited well and he has visited campus several times with Sharife Cooper. He has Auburn family connections but is still waiting for Auburn to offer him which is likely contingent on what happens with Thor and Brown the next couple weeks.

I think if Auburn ends up offering Cardwell, he’s likely to join the Tigers. It certainly sounds like he’s waiting to see if that’s an option before making any decisions.

Auburn has also thrown their hat at several transfers within the transfer portal as well but I would expect Auburn to see what Thor and Green decide to do before anything else. We’ll see what happens over the next 2 weeks but despite it being the off-season, it’s a very exciting time to be an Auburn Basketball fan!
