Auburn freshman DJ Williams scored his first career touchdown against Ole Miss Saturday with a little help from a friend. When the running back was bottled up on the goal line 6 foot – 7 lineman Prince Tega Wonogho picked up the 5-10 running back and spiked him into the endzone turf for the score.
Wanogho said, “I saw him right there and all I could think about was grab him and put him into the end zone. I didn’t mean to slam him though, but I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do.” I guess it was good he didn’t get called for spiking the player ball.
Another CBS Game of the Week for Tigers.
For the fourth time this season Auburn has been chosen to be featured as the CBS Game of the Week. The network announced yesterday that it will broadcast the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. The No.12 Tigers and No. 6 Bulldogs will kick off Nov. 16 at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS.
Another SEC Player of the Week Award.
An Auburn player picked up the 11th player of the week award when Derrick Brown was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week Monday. The senior recorded seven solo tackles and a tackle for a loss. It was the third time for the senior defensive tackle to garner the recognition tying him with fellow DT Marlon Davidson.
After receiving the award, Brown teased Davidson with a tweet: “Just want to take the time to make sure you see it’s all equal @marlondavidson7 you will lose.”
Has Auburn finally found a center?
Nick Brahms made his first start of the season Saturday. And the sophomore was key cog in an offense that produced 340 passing yards and 507 total yards on the night. Quarterback Bo Nix said Brams did a good job, “We had great quarterback-center exchanges,” said Nix. It’s good to know the position may be in good hand s heading into Amen Corner. However one can’t help but wonder why it took so long to find the right guy.
Welcome home Tigers?
Saturday’s contest against the Rebels was the Tigers’ first home game since the end of September. You would think fans would be ready to be loud and proud. However, as I sat in the stands the atmosphere seemed subdued. Not anything like the reputation that Jordan-Hare Stadium has earned as one of the SEC’s historically toughest venues.
I sat next to four men who had journeyed from Boston to witness the intense environment of an SEC football game. I proudly told them they were in for a treat once shoe met leather. Boy was I wrong. Not only was the crowd underwhelming, more than a smattering of boo’s fell on the team right before half as coach Malzahn opted not to run one more play before the horn sounded.
The players were looking forward to a home field advantage after a grueling five weeks on the road including raucous environments at Florida and LSU. Instead they received a “flat” crowd atmosphere. And the Tigers couldn’t help but notice.
A couple of players expressed hurt feelings about it via their twitter accounts. Linebacker K.J. Britt said, “We need our fans on our side. Starting to question what Auburn fans are cheering for now. Lets get back on track and make Jordan-Hare stadium GREAT AGAIN!”
The story produced negative headlines nationally. As “family” has always been the mantra of Auburn University, this is something I never expect to see on the Plains. And frankly I was embarrassed for the coaches, for the recruits sitting in the stands, and mostly for the players.
No matter what fans feel about the coaching, the quarterback play, or the 7-2 record, the players deserve better. Until next time …
