TWO-A-DAYS: Belated 86 Days to Kickoff! - Anthony Schwartz

Now this guy is Auburn fast.

THE RECRUIT

Anthony Schwartz is one of the youngest guys on this list, as he was a part of the 2018 recruiting class. An alum of American Heritage in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Schwartz was a late addition to the Auburn signing class. He was generally thought to be a Florida lean most of his recruitment, but ultimately committed to the Tigers during the Under-Armour All-American game.

Schwartz only recorded 42 touches over three varsity season in high school, so there was always going to be some uncertainty involved with projecting him as an SEC talent. Schwartz impressed enough people to be a highly rated 4* recruit, though, and his speed had a lot to do with it. Here’s our own AUNerd’s take on Schwartz when he committed.

Let me be honest. Heading into Schwartz’s senior season I did not think he was an SEC calibre WR. Yes he is fast but you need to be more than fast to get open at the next level. I wanted to see him improve as a route runner and look more like a wide receiver and less like a track guy posing as a wide receiver. After his senior season, I am a believer. You can tell this young man put the work in and has grown into a true wideout. “Steady” and “consistent” were the words most often used by scouts this week when describing his play in practices. He impressed many with his ability to consistently get separation underneath and ability to make catches in traffic. His straight line speed makes him special but it’s his improvement at technique that makes him a legitimate four star wide receiver prospect and a guy Auburn fans should be really excited about.

Schwartz also is a world record holder, setting the U18 100m record at 10.15 seconds.

THE PLAYER

A part of the youth movement in the Auburn skill positions last year, Schwartz forced his way onto the field in the second game of the season. After recording 6 touches for 117 yards in the Alabama State rout, the speed demon would record at least one touch in every game the rest of the season, split about 50/50 between receptions end-around rushes. The loss of Eli Stove for the majority of the season allowed Schwartz to be the primary motion man.

Schwartz’s best game came (ironicaly) against Tennessee, when he recorded 3 carries for 44 yards and 2 catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was unlike anything I’ve ever seen on a football field before. I was lucky enough to be sitting near the 50 yard line (it was a thin crowd, seats weren’t hard to find) when Stidham hit Schwartz around midfield. Schwartz had to come back to the ball a bit, and with a defender tailing him, a safety chasing him full speed from the line of scrimmage, and another safety bearing down on him from upfield, Schwartz managed to break one tackle, turn upfield, and just blast away from the other two defenders for a touchdown. My description doesn’t even do it justice, so just watch:

Schwartz is also a track athlete at Auburn, winning gold in the 100 meters in his first meet as a Tiger and being the only freshman in the SEC Championship Finals for the same race.
