TWO-A-DAYS: Belated 80 Days to Kickoff

Rose wore red. But Auburn wears blue. Another recruiting bust dismissed for a “personal issue”.

THE RECRUIT

One of the biggest recruits out of the state of Alabama in the 2011 class, Rose had offers from all the big schools - Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, etc. He was generally considered one of the best corner recruits in the country, and was expected to be able to come in and play right away at Auburn in 2011.

THE PLAYER

Rose, out of Leeds high school, did just that, playing (but not starting) in 9 games his freshman year. However, by the time spring practice finished up in 2012, Rose had fallen in the depth chart behind guys like Chris Davis, T’Sharvan Bell, Jermaine Whitehead, and Robinson Therezie. Rose was dismissed from Auburn in July of that year, citing “personal reasons”, though neither Rose nor the coaches expounded on what that meant. His high school coach, Keith Etheredge, provided some limited color to the Birmingham News.

“It has nothing to do with grades or anything that deals with the police or anything like that. It’s just that he doesn’t need to be down there anymore. It has nothing to do with the coaching staff or Auburn or anything like that. They’ve been great to Jonathan.”

Rose would ended up signing with Nebraska and head coach Mike Riley, where he would play for three seasons before getting dismissed before the bowl game in his senior year. The once high school phenom never translated his recruiting ranking to on-field production in Lincoln.
