Auburn Baseball had Mississippi State on the ropes in Sundays’ late game in the College World Series. The Tigers had a 4-3 lead- in the bottom of the ninth needing only one out to advance to the winner’s bracket but it was not to be,
Edouard Julien had almost single handily put the Tigers(38-27) in a position to win with a two-run homer and run-scoring single that put Auburn up 4-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth yet, the Tigers fell 5-4 to the No.6 Bulldogs (52-13).
Julien had a chance to win the game when he fielded a two out grounder for a possible game winning third out but the third baseman over threw the bag to allow the tying run to score.
It was a disheartening way to lose after the underdog Tigers had led the entire game. No one feels worse than Julien, but the sophomore done his part for Auburn to even come so close.
Miss State’s SEC Pitcher of the Year, Ethan Small could not handle Julien and the Tiger batters while Jack Owen, Ricahrd Fitts, and Tanner Burns kept the Dogs at bay most of the night. But it was all for naught.
Now coach Butch Thompson has to find away to get this bunch to put it behind them because they will be facing a tough Louisville team in an elimination game on Tuesday with starter Jack Owen probably unavailable on one day of rest.
Facing a team that narrowly lost to No.1 Vanderbilt on Sunday will be a tough challenge but that’s the hand they’ve been dealt. Now they have to play it out.
Go Tigers beat the Cardinals!
