College World Series Review: Mississippi State

Game 4– Auburn vs #6 Mississippi State

  • Sunday: 5-4 L

Baseball can be a very cruel sport, much like all sports however baseball seems to be a much different kind of mean. There are 54 outs in a baseball game for both teams and for 53 of them the Auburn Tigers were head and shoulders better than Mississippi State. State had their chances, leaving 11 on the basepads throughout the game but Auburn had been able to get out of situations and get the hits it needed, aided greatly by Edouard Julien, who batted in 3 of Auburn 4 runs on the night, including this moon shot that tied the record for longest home run at TD Ameritrade history.

However, in the 9th inning the Mississippi State bats came alive and cut the lead to 1 with a runner on 2nd with 2 outs. A soft grounder to Julien was scooped up as the runner passed in front of Julien and he threw high to 1st, allowing the tying run to score. The next hit by state would be the walk off run and sends Auburn to the 0-1 game against Louisville on Tuesday. It’s not all on Julien by any stretch but it just shows how mean the sport of baseball is. It giveth and it taketh away. Lost in all of this was the outstanding start by Jack Owen who went 5 innings, giving up just a run on 6 hits to the Bulldogs, and how Auburn’s offense was able to get the pitch count of State ace Ethan Small up and knock him out of the game after 5 innings when he is normally good to go 7 to 8 innings normally. Now Auburn has to pick up the pieces and get ready to play for their season against a tough Louisville team. If any Auburn team can do it, I can’t think of a better one to come back with fire in their gut than the 2019 Auburn Tigers.

On Deck

  • Game 7: vs Louisville – 1 PM – ESPN

(takes a deep breath) SO, on Tuesday Auburn will see the ACC regular season champion Louisville Cardinals. More than likely they will face Nick Bennett who has a 4.40 ERA with a 7-3 record on the year. He is a guy that Auburn can get to but expect to see the Louisville pen come in if they get into trouble at any point as they have an embarrassment of riches in terms of arms. However, they will be without Michael McAvene for one last game as he finishes out his suspension for arguing balls and strikes. Auburn will more than likely go with Bailey Horn who should be completely over the stomach bug that really affected him last week in North Carolina. It’s a tall order to get over what happened last night, it is. The good part of the CWS is that they give you a day in between games and that might be just what Auburn needs. One thing is for sure, the right guy is leading them through one of the toughest finishes I’ve seen since the end of last season.
