Jared Harper Leaving for NBA

We no longer have Jared.

Well, the best point guard in recent Auburn history, and maybe ever, is heading on to the next stage of his basketball career.

Jared Harper announced earlier this afternoon that he’s forgoing his senior year and heading to the NBA Draft. He also said that he’ll be hiring an agent, which all but assures that he won’t be returning in any form or fashion to the Plains next fall.

It’s unfortunate for sure, and with the news coming just hours after we surmised about the possibility of a Harper/Doughty/Okeke/McLemore/Wiley starting lineup in November, it certainly puts a damper on the lofty preseason rankings that have already been bestowed upon the Tigers. Now, it appears as if J’Von McCormick is the heir apparent at point guard, and that’s a pretty good safety net based on what he did in March.

As for Jared, we’ll always have the memories. He led the charge for two SEC Championship teams, and was the floor general for the first Final Four team in school history. Overall in his career he scored 1,427 points (13.5 ppg in 106 career appearances), shot 79.2% from the foul line, and 35.9% from three, with 213 total career three-pointers. He notched 510 assists in three seasons, going from 95 as a freshman, to 185 as a sophomore, to 230 as a senior.

Join me for one final round, everyone. Before the memories get too faded, let’s belt it out one final time.

Best of luck, Jared! War Eagle forever!
