NEW POLL ALERT: Auburn... Falls??

Shows that somebody (Alabama) must not be worth much in the voters’ eyes.

A new AP Poll just came out, and Auburn actually lost ground. It’s dumb.

The Tigers beat Missouri 92-58 earlier last week before housing Alabama 84-63 on Saturday night to complete a 2-0 stretch at home. Those wins came by an average of 27.5 points, and Auburn seemed to get into more of a groove and look like the top ten team we saw earlier this season. However, the Tigers fell from 26th to 28th despite having a huge week. Here’s the top ten:

  1. Tennessee
  2. Duke
  3. Virginia
  4. Gonzaga
  5. Kentucky
  6. Nevada
  7. Michigan
  8. North Carolina
  9. Michigan State
  10. Marquette

Other SEC teams in the rankings are LSU at #21, and that’s it. LSU lost its first SEC game of the season in a 90-89 thriller against Arkansas, and Mississippi State dropped out of the poll, but still sits ahead of Auburn in the receiving votes category. Also ahead of the Tigers are Washington, a team that Auburn beat by 22 points back in November.

Now, Auburn gets a chance to beat Florida for the first time in the regular season this millennium. Last year, the Tigers blew a chance to clinch the SEC regular season title before the final weekend of the year as they went down to Gainesville and KeVaughn Allen hit 6 threes off the bench to give the Gators a 72-66 win.

Florida’s not great, and Auburn seems to be hitting on all cylinders over the past week. With this coming game at home, it’s huge. Then Saturday, Auburn’s at LSU for what will be a huge opportunity to jump back in the polls and creep up on the top teams in the SEC standings.

Right now, here’s how the SEC looks:

  1. Tennessee (8-0)
  2. Kentucky (7-1)
  3. LSU (7-1)
  4. South Carolina (6-2)
  5. Mississippi State (4-4)
  6. Auburn (4-4)
  7. Ole Miss (4-4)
  8. Alabama (4-4)
  9. Arkansas (4-4)
  10. Florida (4-4)
  11. Missouri (2-6)
  12. Georgia (1-7)
  13. Texas A&M (1-7)
  14. Vanderbilt (0-8)

As you can see, there’s a logjam in the middle, with six teams tied at 4-4. If Auburn can get two wins this week, it could pull them even with South Carolina. It all starts on Tuesday at home, though, so we need the same kind of crowd that we had on Saturday as the Tigers go for a win over the Gators. War Eagle!
