GAME RECAP: Kentucky 80, Auburn 53

Kill me.

Auburn hasn’t done well on CBS lately. Today was no exception, falling to Kentucky in Lexington 80-53. It really wasn’t that close, either, as Auburn never had a shot in the second half.

Kentucky blitzed the Tigers from start to finish, getting 24 points from a red-hot PJ Washington, and hitting 55% of their shots in the win. Auburn went cold for long stretches, shooting only 32% on the day as they fall back to 7-7 in the SEC. Kentucky, meanwhile, improves to 12-2 in the league.

A frenetic game for the opening minutes, the two teams played more than eight minutes before the first stoppage, wherein Kentucky led 16-10 at the first timeout. They quickly established a double-digit lead on a Tyler Herro layup to take a 25-15 edge, and that lead blossomed to 36-17 shortly after on three-pointer from Herro. During that stretch, PJ Washington also hit four threes, indicative of the entire shooting afternoon for the Wildcats. Auburn made a run, though, and put together a 14-2 spurt to pull within seven points, but Kentucky went on a quick run, capped by a Herro three, to take a 45-31 lead at halftime.

Out of the half, it was curtains.

Kentucky went on an 11-0 run to start the second half, and Auburn only broke the 40-point mark at the midway point of the second half on an Anfernee McLemore three. At that time, they faced a 67-40 deficit. The Wildcats cruised from there on their way to a very easy 80-53 victory at home.

Auburn was led in scoring by Chuma Okeke, who had 14 points. Jared Harper and Anfernee McLemore each had double digits as well, but Bryce Brown was ice cold with only six points, and Malik Dunbar went scoreless in his second-straight start. Washington’s 24 for Kentucky, and Herro’s 17 led the way, as the Wildcats out-rebounded Auburn 43-24, and had 15 assists in the ballgame.

Now, Auburn faces three must-win ballgames as they head on the road to take on Georgia this Wednesday before a home game with Mississippi State next weekend. Let’s forget today, tomorrow will be better. Ugh.
