Auburn Baseball Stumbles Again

12576137

For the second day in a row, it was an error that led to an Auburn loss.

Heading into the fifth, neither Auburn nor Mizzou had recorded a single hit. That changed when Mizzou RF Trey Harris stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in the top half of the inning.

After an error and two walks loaded the bases, Harris dug in with two outs to face Auburn pitcher Tanner Burns. Harris drove the 0-1 pitch over the towering left field wall to bring four runs home for Mizzou — all unearned. The grand-slam paved the way for Mizzou’s 5-0 victory in Sunday’s rubber match to win the weekend series over Auburn.

Missouri recently swapped its Friday and Sunday starting pitchers, so top MLB prospect Bryce Montes De Oca was on the mound yesterday instead of TJ Sikkema, pitching lights-out baseball. Montes De Oca allowed just one hit through six innings of work before Nile Ball took the mound in relief for Mizzou, allowing no hits for the remainder of the game.

Auburn moves to 22-7 (4-5) on the year, and will surely see that No. 11 ranking stumble for the second week in a row following another conference series loss. They travel to Arkansas next week for a pivotal SEC West series that would put the winner in the top half of the division and the loser down toward the bottom.
