This footage of Bo Jackson snoozing before the 1986 Cotton Bowl vs. Texas A&M is the best

You hear Bo Jackson stories and you believe them, obviously, but at the same time… you know… people are prone to exaggeration. Did he really get to skip practice? Did he never workout?

Did he really sleep right up to game time?

Yes. At least he did before the 1986 Cotton Bowl, his last game as an Auburn Tiger.

It’s minutes till kickoff. The cameras are in Texas A&M’s locker room capturing Jackie Sherrill’s last-minute exhortations. The team bows in prayer, eagerly. They weren’t just going up against Auburn—CBS wouldn’t let them. On TV, in the papers, it was the Aggies vs. The Heisman Trophy.

The cameras cut away. What about the Auburn locker room? How electric is it in there? What is the great Bo Jackson doing seconds before his college football swan song? Let’s find out!

Brent Musburger can call it meditation and concentration all he wants. It is isn’t. The soon-to-be Cotton Bowl MVP, eyes closed, head in hand, mouth even slightly open, is trying to catch some z’s, just like we’ve been told, final instructions from Pat Dye—that’s him you hear in the background—be damned.

I laughed out loud.
