'A matter of time' for Jarrett Stidham to succeed at Auburn, Kevin Sumlin says

Kevin Sumlin recruited Jarrett Stidham - twice.

The Texas A&M coach was very high on the Stephenville, Texas native and former Baylor signal caller, who picked Auburn over the Aggies and Florida this past winter.

Sumlin believes Stidham will succeed at Auburn, it's simply a matter of time.

"He's a very talented young man," Sumlin said at SEC Media Days on Wednesday. "He's a guy that in high school, I thought he was as good as there was. We had to make some decisions on recruiting at our place and we made those decisions.

"He's going to be successful, it's just a matter of when and what time. He brings a lot to the table. He's a guy that can move around a little bit, but a guy that's highly accurate and can throw it. I wish him the best of luck and wish him success."

Stidham, who still technically has to be named Auburn's starter, brings a much stronger arm to the quarterback position than the Tigers have had in recent year.

He averaged 21.3 yards per attempt on deep throws, most among all college quarterbacks in 2015, according to Pro Football Focus, which calculated only 37.3 percent of Stidham's completions at Baylor came on passes that traveled less than 10 yards in the air.

Such proficiency downfield would be a drastic change for Auburn, which failed to complete a pass over 20 yards against Texas A&M in its 29-16 loss to the Aggies last season.

"I hope he doesn't throw the deep ball against us," Sumlin said.
