Gus Malzahn Says Tigers Not Concerned With Polls … Focused on Playing Vandy

Gus Malzahn met the media today in his pre Vanderbilt game press conference. Of course Gus said he was pleased at how his team has gotten better every week and said he was glad the Tigers faced some adversity in their 40-29 win at Ole Miss. It was a good experience for a team that still has its two toughest road games left on the schedule.

He lauded the play of both running back, Kamryn Pettway and quarterback, Sean White. He said White is becoming more of a run threat and, “Is starting to really evolve as a quarterback in this league.”

It’s hard to believe but the coach said Pettway, “Is still learning as he goes. But he’s a real weapon right now.” After that statement, one has to wonder just how good the SEC’s leading rusher can be when he’s through learning the position.

Malzahn also commented on other players and addressed individual injuries. He said that defensive end Paul James III will not be able to return this season. However, the prognosis for freshman running back Malik Miller looks better as he seems to be recovering quickly from knee surgery.

The good news on the injury front is wide receiver Tony Stevens and linebacker Tre  Williams were able to practice today.

The Tigers are not looking ahead at any remaining game, Malzahn said, but are focused on playing Vandy which he says will be bringing a good defense to Jordan-Hare. The Commodores are only giving up an average of 15 points per game. “If you look ahead in this league, you’ll get burned … We are 100 percent locked in on Vanderbilt.”
