After scheduling three satellite camps in Georgia and Mississippi, Auburn is set to hold a camp in the fertile Miami, Fl. recruiting ground June 10. Auburn has signed 14 players from Florida in the last two years.
Yesterday, the Auburn Football Team lost a four star D-back who hailed from south Florida when Sophomore Tim Irvin announced on twitter he would be transferring. Irvin was expected to provide depth in 2016. The sophomore accounted for two quarterback hurries and 18 tackles last season in 10 appearances.
It’s an unusual occurrence for this writer to commend Alabama’s Nick Saban, but I have to admit it was good to see him participating in the Lutzie 43 Invitational at FarmLinks in Sylacauga this week in support of the Lutzie 43 Foundation.
“I thought (Phillip) was always an outstanding player and certainly represented, his university in a first-class way and set a good example for a lot of people in a lot of ways,” said Saban.
“I just think Mike (Phillip’s father) has done a great job of trying to promote this and send a positive message to a lot of young people … to a positive impact on their life.”
Auburn no longer has the largest Under Armour contract as the company announced a deal yesterday with UCLA that gave the Bruins the richest college sports apparel deal in the country. Auburn’s deal is for $8.68 million per year while UCLA will receive $18.6 million.
Auburn’s Anfernee Grier has to be the SEC’s most complete player in 2016. Yet the junior was named Second-Team All-SEC this week. After a season that saw him among the SEC’s best in both offense and defense, one has to wonder what Grier has to do to get a first team selection?
The centerfielder hit .366 on the year with 12 home runs and 41 RBI’s. He was first in runs (87), first in total bases (137), second in hits (56), home runs (12), stolen bases (19).
Defensively, he was all over the outfield, often making diving catches. He finish with a .977 fielding percentage. The league did name him to the All Defensive Team but a player with his total skill set deserves to be first team All-SEC.
It didn’t take long for the Auburn Softball Team to find out their opponent for this weekend’s Super Regional. After Arizona beat Tennessee twice Sunday, the Wildcats became the Tigers next opponent.
It’s a safe bet that Arizona coach Mike Candrea will be depending heavily on southpaw pitching ace Danielle O’Toole as the Tigers have four lefty’s in their lineup. O’Toole won three games and pitched two shutouts in Knoxville. However, after last weekend, senior Emily Carosone spoke for her teammates’ confidence level when she said, “It’s our expectation now … We expect to make it to the World Series, we expect to play Auburn softball.”
Auburn drawing Arizona will add a bit of extra drama to the games as Candrea and Auburn Coach Clint Meyers are old adversaries from when Meyers was at Arizona State.
The Super Regional will begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and be broadcast on ESPN2. The second game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday on ESPN. And if a third game, should be needed, ESPNU will broadcast it at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Go Tigers!
