A meaningless touchdown in an even more meaningless game

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#3 — DJ Williams, RB

Game — Auburn vs. Northwestern, January 1, 2021

You know, I’d hoped that the touchdowns got more entertaining the closer we got to Akron, but this one is about as depressing as it gets. This was a bowl game that mattered even less than most bowl games. There’s still not a good reason for Auburn to have played in it other than to keep some sort of streak going. And it’s not like that streak is decades old. Auburn missed a bowl game 9 years ago.

Then we have the score itself. The game was completely and totally over. To be honest, I had quit watching by this point. There were better things to do with my New Year’s Day. I’m grateful for the effort of the players like always, but the only thing that game could do at that point was make me sad. It’s just not worth it.

To add another layer of sadness, DJ Williams would enter the transfer portal not long after this game. I won’t blame him for leaving.

Zykevious Walker still has #3 on the defensive side, but its new owner on the offensive side of the ball is true freshman Tar’Varish Dawson Jr., who has impressed coaches in fall camp. While I certainly wouldn’t turn down a defensive score, I don’t think we’ll have to wait long for young Mr. Dawson to write his name in the book.
