Chandler Cox gets Auburn back in it
Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#27 — Chandler Cox
Game — Auburn vs Texas A&M, November 3, 2018
There are a lot of Auburn fans that listened to this win on the radio or saw it on the TV at the tailgate, because a whole bunch of them, including my dad, left in the middle of the fourth quarter. To an extent, I can’t really blame them. After the Aggies missed a chip shot field goal, Auburn went backwards 15 yards and punted. At that point, Auburn’s offense had managed just 16 yards and 1 first down on 14 plays in the second half. I even remarked that the game was over. I was just stubbornly staying until the end like I always do. We were headed for our fourth straight loss to Texas A&M at home.
Then Kellen Mond threw a terrible ball on a corner route that Noah Igbinoghene intercepted.
Then Jarrett Stidham completed 5 of 6 passes for 67 yards to set up Auburn on the 1.
Then we did that ludicrously unbalanced line toss-sweep to Chandler Cox that everyone knew was coming and sometimes it still worked:
Now Auburn just needed a stop and one more score. After two A&M first downs, a big run stop and a Derrick Brown sack set up a 3rd and long that the Aggies failed to pick up. Then....honestly just hit play on this and enjoy.
What a fun 3 play sequence:
- Tutt gets a better block and he houses that thing. That was an absolutely perfect call.
- I have no idea what defense A&M was thinking here. I get that it’s late and you want to keep Auburn in bounds, but it’s not under a minute! There’s still 2 full minutes to go. Auburn has plenty of time, and this was 20 yards even without the terrible pursuit angles by the Aggie defense
- And then they leave Seth Williams in one-on-one on the outside. Now I don’t actually hate this decision because at this point you know Auburn is in range to tie anyway. Might as well dare them to try and make a big play. If they get it, you get the ball back. Which is exactly what happened.
Chandler Cox was a perfect Gus Malzahn player. He could line up anywhere. He was a good blocker between the tackles. He was a good perimeter blocker. He had good hands. He could be a serviceable running back in short-yardage. He was also a quarterback in high school and let’s just not talk about what Gus tried to do with that. I’ll just say that Chandler Cox’s passing numbers are the opposite of Ryan Davis’s (btw, Auburn’s first touchdown in this game? A Ryan Davis pass to Sal Canella).
#27 currently belongs to freshman running back Jarquez Hunter, who has already wowed teammates with his work ethic on the field and in the weight room. I have a good feeling he’s on this list by the end of the year.
