Late Night Edition
Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#26 — Anders Carlson
Game — Auburn vs Northwestern, January 1st, 2021
As we creep inside four weeks to kickoff, our countdown takes us to the most recent second most recent score* in Auburn football history - that is, Anders Carlson’s extra point early in the third quarter in the Citrus Bowl.
The younger Carlson brother was actually the points leader in the game for either team, going 2/2 on field goals (including a 50 yarder for Auburn’s first points) and 1/1 on extra points. The extra point brought the score to 13-14 with Auburn still trailing after Elijah Canion’s monster 57 yard touchdown, but the Tigers would not score again until D.J. Williams punched in a 2-yarder in garbage time at the end of the game.
Because an extra point isn’t much to look at (and I’m not even sure video exists outside of full game replays), we’ll forgo the usual highlight tonight. However, I do want to take a chance to look at The Bookstore’s career numbers as we head into his senior year.
2020 was undoubtedly Ander’s best season, knocking home 20 of 22 attempts for a 91% success rate. I would hazard to guess that Auburn’s improved ground game last season (see: Tank Bigsby) got Auburn into better field position before stalling out in the redzone than previous years, which, combined with a third year of experience, put Carlson in the best position to succeed.
For his career, Carlson sits at 275 points scored, just one point below the highest non-kicker in Auburn history, Carnell Williams. In all likelihood, we will see Anders jump both Williams (4th all time, 276) and John Vaughn (3rd all time, 312) in the Auburn record books this season, with an outside shot to pass Wes Byrum (2nd all time, 363) as well. If the senior maintains his per game career average of 7.4 ppg, he would finish his career with 372 total points, topping Byrum.
Of course, there’s no world in which he could reach the top of the list in 2021. That spot, of course, is held by older brother Daniel, with a whopping 480 points, good for an SEC record.
Then again... Anders could use his Covid year in 2022. I’ve seen brothers do crazier things.
