Jay Cutler fumbles a touchdown to Auburn for the second time in 2002

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#53 — Spencer Johnson, DT

Game — Auburn vs. Vanderbilt, September 14, 2002

After falling in their opener to USC in their season opener, Auburn returned home to blow out Western Carolina before facing Vanderbilt in their SEC opener of 2002. It was a game marred by turnovers. The teams combined for 6 fumbles, 3 lost, and Jay Cutler threw two interceptions in blustery and sometimes rainy conditions due to the presence of Tropical Storm Hanna. Auburn took an early 7-0 lead on Vanderbilt’s first turnover, a sack, scoop, and score in pouring down rain by Karlos Dansby. Auburn would stretch the lead to 24-6 when Mayo Sowell strip-sacked Cutler, and Spencer Johnson put the game away...

That touchdown would give Auburn the final margin of 31-6.

As of right now, #53 does not belong to a current player. Maybe an incoming freshman will take Spencer’s old number and make it their own.
