Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#52 — Antonio Coleman, DE
Game — Mississippi State at Auburn, September 12th, 2009
The Gene Chizik era was off to a bang.
After scoring more points (37) in the season opener against Louisiana Tech than the team did against any FBS opponent in the 2008 campaign, week 2 called for Auburn to... amend... for consecutive bad showings against Mississippi State in previous years.
And amend they did. Already up 7-0 after a Kodi Burns punch-in, all-SEC defensive end Antonio Coleman dropped back into coverage and snagged a leaping interception over the middle from “the next Tim Tebow” Chris Relf. Coleman was able to cut to the sideline, and tip-toe the 20 yards in for a score.
Antonio Coleman may be one of the most underrated defensive players in Auburn history. While he never really made it big in the NFL (he was almost 24 by the NFL Draft, and he was a tweener with his size), he was a terror to opposing quarterbacks on some not great Auburn teams. Coleman totaled 150 tackles, 46.5 TFLs, and 24.5 sacks in his four seasons.
That career sack total places him 3rd all-time at Auburn, behind only Quentin Groves and Gerald Robinson (26 each), and ahead of legends like Tracy Rocker (21).
It’s highly unlikely we see a #52 score for Auburn any time soon, as that number is currently occupied by starting center Nick Brahms (fumble recovery maybe?) and walk-on linebacker Russ Logan (no game action in three years). I mean, I won’t complain if one of them does score. Let’s get weird.
