NumerAUlogy — 41 Days

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#41 — Tyrone Dillard, TE

Game — Auburn vs. Florida, October 18, 1997

Coming off of a national title in 1996, Florida looked just as good as 1997 started. They scored 82 points on poor Central Michigan. After a hard fought win over Tennessee to deny Peyton Manning any wins over Florida in his career, all they had before a showdown with a top 10 Auburn team was a decent LSU team in Baton Rouge, but this was an LSU team that Florida had beaten 56-13 the year before.

Ah yes. That’ll happen.

Instead of a perhaps over-confident Florida strutting into Jordan-Hare, Auburn got an angry Florida hell bent on revenge. The Gators jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but a middle screen to the backup tight end would get the Tigers back in the game.

Auburn would tie the game just before halftime, but they were no match for the Gators in the second half, falling 24-10.

Dillard only caught four passes in 1997, but given that he turned those 4 into 42 yards and a score, maybe he should have been targeted a bit more.

#41 is currently owned by punter Aidan Marshall. Just as we said on 91 Day version, I would love for Ty Dillard to be taken off the hook by a fake punt.
