NumerAUlogy — 36/35 Days

NCAA Football: Alabama at Auburn
John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#36 — Kamryn Pettway

Game — Auburn @ Arkansas, October 21, 2017

At halftime, this one was a bit closer than we anticipated. Auburn seemed to be in control of the game, but it was just 17-6 against a pretty bad Arkansas team as the 3rd quarter started. Then Auburn got a vintage Kam Pettway quarter. He scored from the 2, the 38, and finally the 11:

Sadly, this was the last we would see of a healthy Pettway. We can always “what if” Kerryon not getting hurt, but what if he hadn’t had to carry the entire load through that great November?

36 currently belongs to cornerback Jaylin Simpson, so we’ve got a decent chance at a pick-6 to replace Bubba on the list.

#35 — Zakoby McClain, LB

Game — Auburn vs. Alabama, November 30, 2019

I don’t have to tell you any more about this game. It’s still fresh enough in everyone’s mind. I will say this is absolutely my favorite play from this game. Auburn was trailing 31-30 and absolutely staring at going behind by 8. On the play before, Jamien Sherwood had committed pass interference to force Alabama to earn their touchdown. That would prove to be our version of Luis Suarez’s handball against Ghana in the 2010 World Cup.

This was a great job by Big Kat Bryant to force Jones to throw earlier than he wanted. Then the rolling ball of butcher knives from Valdosta, GA was in the right place at the right time.

Linebacker Cam Riley and walk-on wide receiver James Owens Moss currently have #35 after McClain swapped to #9 before the 2020 season. So Zakoby could pick up another number on the list and/or lose this one.
