Former 5-star UGA Wide Receiver Demetris Robertson Transferring to Auburn

Tigers add a veteran playmaker to young WR room.

Auburn’s new coaching staff has had no reservations about utilizing the transfer portal to augment holes in the 2021 depth chart. They’ve added potential impact players to the quarterback, running back, defensive line, outside linebacker, and defensive back rooms this off-season. Now they are hoping to provide this talented but very inexperienced wide receiver group with a veteran leader as this afternoon former 5-star wide receiver Demetris Robertson announced his intentions to use his last year of eligibility on the Plains.

Robertson might be the most interesting portal addition this off-season. He was the #1 ranked WR in the 2016 class and #13 player overall. He surprised a lot of folks when he chose to commit to the Cal Golden Bears over the instate Dawgs. Initially, that decision looked to be smart as he earned Freshman All-American honors following an explosive 50 reception, 767 yard, 7 touchdown debut season.

However, a sports hernia injury sidelined him after 2 games in 2017. Time in recovery brought on homesickness and the playmaker elected to transfer back to the state of GA and play for the Dawgs. Like most highly rated wide receivers, he’s wasted away on UGA’s roster under Kirby Smart. In his three seasons at UGA he failed to come close to matching his 2016 season catching only 42 passes for 443 yards and 3 touchdowns.

So the question is whether or not that 2016 version of D-Rob is still around and he was just stuck in a bad offense or have the numerous nagging injuries he’s acquired over his career left him a less athletic version of his previous self. At minimum, he will add a veteran voice to that wide receiver room and should have a positive impact on the locker room overall. He was well respected at UGA and is genuinely regarded as a hard working, focused kid who I think fits the culture Bryan Harsin is trying to build.

He’ll likely see time at both the Z (flanker) and H (slot) spots in Auburn’s offense. Where he fits will likely depend on the development of guys like Ze’Vian Capers, Kobe Hudson, and Ja’Varrius Johnson. It would not surprise me at all though to see Robertson earn a starting role for the Tigers. At minimum, he’s someone that should see plenty of snaps for Auburn this fall.

War Eagle Demetris!
