Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#38 — Daniel Carlson, K

Game — Auburn vs UCF, January 1, 2018

I’ll be honest with everyone, I don’t particularly want to talk about this game.

We all know the story - a team fully over the season after being on the doorstep of the Playoff, forced to match up against the undefeated (and soon to be national-title claiming) G5 representative, UCF.

The Knights would go on to win this Peach Bowl matchup 34-27 on the back of 21 consecutive second half points. Auburn would score last with about four minutes to go, which is where our king Daniel Carlson would tally his final point in an Auburn uniform.

Carlson’s nine points in the loss brought his career total to 480, both an Auburn and SEC record. That tally also ranks sixth all time in NCAA history, and third all-time for a kicker.

Auburn has a pantheon of great kickers, with effectively an unbroken lineage for at least 25 years (aka, my entire life). Wes Byrum ranks 10th all time in career points, and has a national title clinching kick to go with it. Cody Parkey had a solid run on the Plains, and followed it up by setting the NFL Rookie scoring record in 2014.

But it’s important to remember Legatron stands above the rest.

Forgive me if I sound like a broken record, but I don’t think we’ll see #38 score for Auburn this year. In 2021, the jersey will be donned by freshman safety Ahmari Harvey. He’ll be pretty far down the depth chart, so unless he makes a name for himself on special teams somewhere, I don’t see him getting in the endzone.
