It shouldn’t be any surprise which legend was the last #88 to score.
Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#88 - Terry Beasley, WR
Game - Auburn vs. Alabama, November 27th, 1971
Undefeated versus undefeated.
Winner take all.
The Mother of all Iron Bowls.
Fifty years ago, Auburn and Alabama played in arguably the biggest game in the entire history of the rivalry. The two teams were a combined 19-0 at kickoff, and the winner was slated to take on #1 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.
If you’re a younger Auburn fan like myself, and none of this sounds familiar to you, that’s because this game went south quickly.
But we aren’t here to talk about the game as a whole, we’re here to celebrate #88 Terry Beasley.
Down 14-0 in the second quarter, the Auburn defense recovered an Alabama fumble on the Tide 31 yard line. On the very next play, heavy Heisman favorite Pat Sullivan rolled to his right and pitched the ball to tailback Harry Unger. Instead of lowering the shoulder and heading up field, Unger pulled back, and delivered a dime to Auburn’s greatest receiver in the endzone.
That was the sole highlight of the day for the Tigers, as Alabama would go on to win 31-7.
However, the Beasley touchdown capped off a career of 2624 yards and 29 touchdowns, both Auburn records.
Who’ll be the next #88 to score?
Funny. Along with #7 and #34 (and #2 unofficially), no we’ll never see another #88 in an Auburn uniform.
