Honk if you’re the last guy wearing 87 to score a touchdown

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#87 - Cole Bennett, TE

Game - Auburn vs. Alabama, 11/19/2005

This one is from a game that is simultaneously fun and infuriating. Auburn jumped out to a 21-0 lead and had the ball deep in Alabama territory again, but fumbled away that scoring opportunity. After Alabama got on the board to make it 21-7, the game settled into a series of punts. Alabama’s defense settled down (this was their best team before Saban and after Dubose), and Auburn’s defense continued to make Brodie Croyle’s nightmares come true. Auburn finally put together a drive with a couple of completions to Anthony Mix and Devin Aromashodu, and they were set up with 1st and goal...

That would be Auburn’s last score of the game. I don’t know if this is Exhibit A for the concept of “Tubershell”, but it’s one of the first that come to mind.

It seems odd that a common WR/TE number like 87 has gone through this long of a drought. Hopefully Brandon Frazier ends that drought very soon.
