Some much needed help is coming to Auburn’s backfield
Within 48 hours of being retained, Auburn running backs coach Carnell Williams had an offer out in the 2021 class. That offer went to 3-star RB Jarquez Hunter, a highly productive back out of Philadelphia, MS who a number programs, most notably Mississippi State, wanted to sign early as a safety. But Hunter was determined to get a shot at tailback at the next level and his patience has paid off for both himself and Auburn.
Today he officially became an Auburn Tiger.

Hunter had an incredibly productive career at Neshoba Central. This season, he surpassed legendary collegiate running back Marcus Dupree’s all-time Mississippi high school football touchdown record of 87. Hunter finished his high school career with 93 touchdowns, 78 of which came on the ground. Not a bad resume for a high school running back.

Scouting Report
Hunter’s a wide framed back with an impressive combination of burst and power. When he sees a lane, he’s got the acceleration to explode through the lane and break free for a touchdown. There’s no wasted motion in any of his runs and he’s incredibly physical at the point of contact, allowing him to consistently break tackles and pick up yards after contact. He’s a great fit for Bryan Harsin and Mike Bobo’s zone heavy run scheme and someone that will have a chance to see action early for the Tigers given the need at running back.
The Class
Auburn’s 2021 class continues to steadily come together. Hunter’s commitment moves the Tigers back inside the top 30 in 247’s Composite Team Rankings with space to continue to rise in the rankings. With only 17 commitments, Auburn still has room for seven more signees. One spot will likely go to 4-star OLB Dylan Brooks once Tennessee releases him from his National Letter of Intent. The rest will be transfers or any late bloomers in the spring junior college season.
