Tip-Off Countdown: #10 (16) Auburn 80 South Carolina 67

The Devan Cambridge Game

January 22, 2020 - Auburn Arena

After a 15-0 start, the Tigers came back to earth a little bit losing both of their games the following week on the road to Alabama and Florida. But it was time to start a new winning streak and Frank Martin’s South Carolina Gamecocks were the next opponents for Auburn.

Auburn got off to another slow start as they had just 6 points going into the Under 12 TV Timeout. But an unlikely hero was about to emerge on this evening and have himself a career night.

Insert Devan Cambridge.

In 5 SEC games before this one, Cambridge had a combined 4 points and had only made 7 3-pointers on the season. Which made what we saw from Devan on this Wednesday evening in Auburn Arena even more incredible (and was sorely needed).

A few moments later, Isaac Okoro would force a turnover, get the ball to Samir Doughty and Devan did the rest.

Two minutes later, Cambridge would knock down his 2nd 3 to give Auburn its first lead since it was 4-2 very early. After another Gamecocks turnover, Jamal Johnson would hit a 3 to make it 21-17 Auburn. After a free throw from South Carolina, Cambridge would connect on 2 more 3-pointers as the Tigers took a 27-18 lead and Cambridge had already established a career high in points (coming into the game it was 10).

South Carolina would tie the game at 29 but Auburn finished the 1st half on a 10-2 run, including a buzzer beater from Okoro and led 39-31 at halftime.

J’Von McCormick had a couple baskets late in the 1st half and got Auburn started in the 2nd half with a 3-pointer and the Tigers first 5 points of the 2nd half. The Tigers led by 11 early in the half but South Carolina got within a possession before Devan would hit his 5th 3 of the evening.

Auburn led 58-53 with a little over 12 minutes to go but the Tigers would go on a 14-0 run to create some separation and it was none other than Devan who would start it with a layup and follow that up with his 6th 3 of the game on the next possession to put Auburn up 10.

Samir Doughty would convert a 3-point play to extend the lead to 13 and then it was #AirDevan time.

Devan’s final bucket of the game came moments later off a great pass from Isaac Okoro.

Auburn would lead by as much as 21 but South Carolina never had an answer after this point.

In just 21 minutes, Devan Cambridge was 10-14 from the field, 6-9 from 3, and scored 26 points. It was quite a performance from this freshmen but based off Bruce Pearl’s reaction postgame: Coach knew Devan had it in him.

J’Von McCormick had 13 points and 5 assists with Samir Doughty scoring 11 points with 5 rebounds. Okoro had 8 points and a season-high 7 assists on the evening.

But the story of this game was Devan Cambridge and if Auburn looks to have a big season, it will need more consistency from Cambridge as he takes on a much bigger role on this year’s team. He looks poised for a breakout season though.

Here are the highlights!
