A double boom day for Coach G

While most of us were asleep last night, Rodney Garner was putting in work. Earlier that afternoon, he landed 3-star defensive end Tobechi Okoli. Late last night, he snagged a long time top target in 4-star defensive tackle Marquis Robinson.

This is a big pickup for the Tigers. Auburn was one of the first major programs to offer Robinson and have made the big man a top priority every since. That early offer paired with the close relationships he built with Auburn’s coaching staff allowed the Tigers to hold off pushes from the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Florida State and Tennessee. The Noles especially were the program posing the biggest threat to the Tigers but this race had been trending Auburn for quite awhile.

Scouting Report

Robinson is a space eater with tremendous short area quickness. Capable of working through double teams and overpowering singe blockers in the run game, Robinson excels at plugging run lanes for the opposing offense. Possessing a big frame with some room still to grow, it wouldn’t shock me to see Robinson play at somewhere around 6’4” 315 lbs by the time he sees the field for the Tigers.

Under Coach G, Auburn’s interior defensive line has typically featured an athletic playmaker who stuffs the stat sheet (think Montravius Adams and Derrick Brown) paired with a run stuffer who opens up opportunities for the other guy or punishes defenses if they spend too much time worrying about the other DT (think Dontavius Russell and Tyrone Truesdell). With Robinson, Auburn now has both of those roles filled in the 2021 class.

The Class

Things have heated up quickly in August following a cold July, The Tigers surged up 12 spots in the 247 Composite Team Rankings now sitting just outside the top 20. A very encouraging start for the Tigers this month. A trend that likely continues in the coming weeks.

Rodney Garner now has 3 pieces in place for this 2021 cycle and will likely now focus the majority of his energy on locking down 4-star Buck Jeremiah Williams and flipping 4-star DE Dylan Brooks. There’s also JUCO DE Jimmori Robinson that Auburn likes a lot who could land in this class come signing day. Put simply, Coach G continues to do Coach G things.
