Thirty-three years ago, Pat Dye was the world’s greatest football machine. So at first I thought this was, like, a Win a Date With Dye or something. But no, Golden Flake meant the van — “The War Eagle “— which came fully loaded: captains chairs, a deluxe stereo system, a color TV, and even a VCP (options may vary).
Yes, a VCP; you could play them at whatever KOA the Lord led you to, but the Lucky Winner would have to record his or her football games at home. And that lucky winner was E.G. Hess Jr of Mobile, Alabama. We know this because on the final Auburn Football Review of 1987, Auburn cheerleader Nancy Crenshaw reached “way down in there” per Coach’s instructions.
I watched this a million times as a kid and always felt bad for the folks whose entry forms were immediately displaced, unceremoniously banished to the floor with no chance to know Nancy’s embrace. Yet Nancy had such a kind face (see photo), it was impossible to stay mad at her.
