WATCH: Dozens of former Auburn majorettes pass the baton to pass the time

Lori C. Johnson, 2004-2005.

In case you were wondering, yes, Barbara Robollo’s still got it. So does fellow 1962 grad Gayle Hammitt. And the Class of 66’s Alice Johnson Mallory… and all the other 72 former — and even some current and future — Auburn majorettes who literally, albeit virtually, passed the baton up through 61 years of Tiger twirlers in a video montage that went viral last week on Facebook.

“Honestly, it just started when I wrote my line and asked if they wanted to do it,” says Birmingham’s Lori C. Johnson, a high-stepper on the Plains from 2004-2005 who thought the project a fun way to pass the time during the pandemic. “But one of the girls on my line, Jessica Coleman, is the current majorette coach (at Auburn), and she said ‘what if we throw it up to this year’s line?’”

So much fun putting this together and appreciating such an amazing tradition and group of ladies! Being an Auburn University Majorette taught me many valuable things and left me with lifelong friends! Enjoy!** I do not own the rights to this music **

Via the very active Auburn majorette Facebook page, Johnson decided to also extend the invitation to all former majorettes willing to strut their stuff while sheltering in place. And plenty were.

“I’m just so glad so many were able to do it and that we could show as many clips as we did,” Johnson says. “It was fun to see style of twirling transition all the way through.”
