Butler has a chance to be an immediate impact player in 2020.
Since 2016, Auburn’s defensive line has been the unquestioned strength of Auburn’s football program. From Montravius Adams and Carl Lawson to Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson, Rodney Garner’s unit has been shutting down opposing rushing attacks and sacking quarterbacks for going on 4 years now. For that to continue in 2020, Auburn really needed to sign a star studded defensive line group this cycle.
Mission accomplished.
In December, Garner added 4* Jay Hardy, 4* Zykeivous Walker, 3* Romello Height and 3* Daniel Foster-Allen. But he wasn’t done. Now he’s adding arguably the top JUCO defensive lineman in this class in 4* DL Deandre Butler. Not bad.

Most JUCO products are either kids with troubled pasts looking for a 2nd chance or late bloomers who just needed time and reps to be ready to play at the next level. Butler is firmly in the latter category.
The Georgia native didn’t start playing football until his senior year of high school. Understandably, he garnered little interest coming out of high school and headed out to Kansas to play for Independence Community College. After a 66 tackle, 22 TFL and 11.5 sack 2019 campaign, all of a sudden Butler generated plenty of interest. Auburn jumped into the race in December and quickly jumped to the top of Butler’s list. After an official visit in January, he saw all he needed to pull the trigger and commit to the Tigers over Oklahoma, Oregon and Tennessee.
Butler is a powerful athlete capable of playing outside or inside for the Tigers. While not the quickest rusher off the edge, Butler makes up for it with his power and impressive closing speed. At 6’5” 280, he could fill Nick Coe’s role next season and play all across the line where needed.
