Coffey has a chance to help AU immediately in 2020

At one point in time, 3* OT Brenden Coffey looked like a lock for Auburn’s class. After an official visit in June he left with the Tigers on top. A visit to Oregon still lurked but most believe AU was the clear team to beat in his recruitment. Then something unexpected happened. The #1 JUCO OT in the country, Kilian Zierer, committed to Auburn out of the blue. That meant Auburn now had two JUCO commits and all of a sudden Coffey didn’t have a spot.

But he never jumped on any other opportunities including the Ducks who landed his teammate T.J. Bass. He seemed off Auburn’s radar so I didn’t pay a ton of attention to his recruitment until all of a sudden there was a buzz he might be someone the Tigers could still pull. Then, early in November, he pulled the trigger. Today, he makes things official

I am fascinated to see where Coffey ends up playing for Auburn. He’s listed as the #3 JUCO OT and I suspect he starts on the outside but I also wouldn’t be shocked if he slid inside at some point. Coffey is a tremendous athlete, arguably the most athlete of any AU OL commit who is still learning the finer points of the game. He’s your typical late bloomer in terms of the position having arrived at JUCO around 220 lbs and now weighing north 270 with more room to add weight if needed.

He won’t enroll until the summer so it’s unlikely he wins a starting role next season but he will be a factor in the 2 deep at least. Like I mentioned before, it wouldn’t shock me if Auburn cross trained him some at both right tackle and right guard to provide immediate depth. Very talented athlete that Grimes will have a chance to develop.

War Eagle Brenden!
