Andy Burcham Named Voice of the Auburn Tigers

Burcham steps into the huge footprints left by the absence of Rod Bramblett.

A little more than two months ago, Auburn lost its voice.

Today, the Tigers found another one, and it comes from a familiar and comforting face.

When Auburn takes the field against Oregon on August 31st, fans won’t have to adjust to hearing a stranger call the action. Instead, Andy Burcham takes the reins and will step into his new role as Voice of the Auburn Tigers.

Burcham was given the job over a limited number of other candidates after careful consideration, and he brings a resume with him that contains work in nearly every Auburn sport.

For years he’s served as pregame and postgame contributor for the football broadcast, where he interviewed head coaches leading up to kickoff and manned the locker room for postgame comments. He’s been a mainstay along with Rod on baseball broadcasts, and he was the longtime voice of women’s basketball. At other times, he’s served on SEC Network broadcasts of various other Auburn athletic events, and he’s known to coaches, players, and staff alike.

With the promotion comes lead responsibility on football, men’s basketball, and baseball, and the domino effect underneath him comes accordingly. Burcham will co-host Tiger Talk with Brad Law each week, and Law will take over the pregame and postgame duties for football broadcasts. Brit Bowen now becomes the women’s basketball and softball announcer as well.

While we all loved the way that Rod Bramblett called a game, and in as much as we’ll miss him, Andy Burcham is going to bring an incredible energy to game broadcasts. It’s an energy that will feel familiar due to his presence on Auburn broadcasts and his true love for Auburn. Here’s an example of a tape delay broadcast on CSS where the style of play-by-play is evident.

And he’s going to always be on Auburn’s side, especially when the whole world seems to be against us.

What remains to be seen is if Burcham will continue the classic “Touchdown Auburn” call that Jim Fyffe popularized and Rod Bramblett adopted. What won’t be in question is the intensity and big game atmosphere that Burcham will bring to every broadcast, no matter how inconsequential. You’re going to think that we’re in the SEC Championship when it could just be week two against Kent State. Part of Andy’s trademark over the years is that he treats every game with excitement and sizzle.

There’s also not going to be a disconnect with the booth chemistry. Andy knows Stan White, Sonny Smith, and Brad Law (who’ll slide into the baseball booth full-time as well). In a time where the Auburn family needs a little bit of a buddy to take over this job in a sensitive time, Andy Burcham is the right guy to step into the spotlight.

It’s going to be weird, not hearing Rod welcome you in with his signature scene setter, overlayed on top of the classic Auburn Network music, but Andy’s going to have the right stuff. This is the right move from all angles, not just the emotional one.
