TWO-A-DAYS: Belated 75 Days to Kickoff! - Josh Holsey

One of Auburn’s most popular players enters the countdown!

As we continue our march to kickoff, we take a look at the top 100 recruits to sign with Auburn of all-time*. The rankings are based on 247’s composite recruit rankings, which unfortunately only date back to 2000.

THE RECRUIT

As a 2012 Under Armour All-American, Josh Holsey was a cornerback out of Fairburn, GA with interest from around the Southeast. A four-star recruit, he played safety in high school but transitioned over to the cornerback position at Auburn after a 73 tackles and 5 interceptions in his senior year at Creekside High.

He had offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Florida State to go along with the one he eventually accepted from the Tigers, and his road on the Plains would turn out to be a winding one.

THE PLAYER

Unfortunately for Holsey, he arrived at Auburn prior to the worst season in recent memory. He saw the highest of highs and lowest of lows, however he made the most out of it right off the bat.

In 2012, Holsey earned a starting spot and played in every game that season on the way to an SEC Academic Honor Roll year. He was poised for big things in 2013 with the entrance of Gus Malzahn and a new defensive staff. In the first game of the season, he snagged his first career interception, but disaster struck in College Station when Holsey tore his ACL and missed the rest of the season.

He came back to full strength in 2014 and earned his first SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor with an 11-tackle performance in the win over Kansas State, and he finished the year with 41 tackles and 2 pass deflections. After that, and with the hype surrounding the 2015 Auburn Tigers, Holsey was supposed to be the lynch pin of another stout defense, but he endured the worst of luck and suffered another torn ACL in the second game of the year against Jacksonville State. There’s another year gone.

Finally healthy in 2016, he led the secondary as the veteran voice playing corner and nickel. In the opener against Clemson, he picked off Deshaun Watson, and finished the year with 30 tackles including 3 interceptions. After the season, he was selected by Washington in the 7th round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

After playing in 12 games in 2017, Holsey saw time just once in 2018 after a freak preseason injury and was waived by the Redskins earlier this spring.
