Monday Musings From The Plains (5-20-19 edition)

The Auburn Softball team showed grit and determination over the weekend in having to face No. 6 national seed and regional host Arizona twice in the NCAA Regional Championship round. That was particularly true after Auburn pitcher Ashlee Swindle suffered a scary injury Friday when she was hit over the eye by a line drive in the Tigers’ win over Colorado State.

“The winning and losing games, all that went out the window when she got hit with that ball,” said Coach Mickey Dean. “ Winning and losing ballgames kind of went out the window until we found out she was going to be okay.”

Thankfully Ashlee was okay but she had to be hospitalized with a concussion and was not able to return to the field for the remaining games.

Her absence from the line up Saturday along with ace Makayla Martin out with a broken hand and shortstop Taylon Snow unavailable, the Tigers still came close in a 2-1 defeat to Arizona.

On Sunday the Wildcats were just too much for Auburn’s depleted roster and their season ended in a 12-3 loss. Coach Dean said he could not remember a season in his 20 year career that had so many injuries. With all the ups and downs this bunch had to face this season it’s just amazing they finished the year with 40 wins. They didn’t make it to a Super Regional but they came oh so close. Auburn fans can be proud of the way they represented Auburn University

Auburn Baseball got a huge win over the weekend against No. 20 LSU in Baton Rouge. Calling it a program win Coach Butch Thompson said, “What this win will do today will be remembered here as one that kept this thing going. I’ll never let that go away as long as I have a say. I’ll always point to today to teach future teams. It was a huge character win.”

Trailing 4-2 in the ninth inning, The Gift Of Tai Chi drove an 0-2 pitch over wall in left field to tie the game. Then in the 11th inning, Will Holland also hit an 0-2 pitch (this one down the line) to score Ryan Bliss  from second base and win the game.

It was Auburn’s (32-23, 14-16 SEC) fifth extra-inning victory in seven extra-inning games this year. The Tigers will now face Tennessee Tuesday in the SEC Tournament. Game time will be at 4:30 in the Hoover Metronome. Until next time War Eagle and …
